UH slides to 11th place

The Hawai'i men's golf team finished the John A. Burns Intercollegiate in 11th place yesterday with an 882 total.

The Warriors shot a final-round 295.

San Diego State led the entire tournament and won the team title with an 853.

The Aztecs' John Lieber won the individual title by two strokes over California's Scott Carlyle and UH sophomore Matt Kodama.

Kodama shot a final-round 67. He started the day seven strokes back of the lead before finishing with a 6-under-par 209 total. Senior Norman-Ganin Asao finished tied for 12th with a 216 after firing a 73.

UH to host conference celebrating women

The Hawaii athletic department will hold the "Exercising Power Conference: Celebrating the UH Community of Women" on Wednesday. The event is part of the school's 30th anniversary celebration of women's athletics.

The keynote speaker is former Stanford basketball player Mariah Burton Nelson, who is now a motivational speaker and author. Other speakers will include Lt. Gov. Mazie Hirono, Linda Lingle and volleyball coach Dave Shoji.

The conference runs from 8 a.m to 4 p.m. at the UH Campus Center Ballroom. Fees range from $5 to $20. Admission for UH students is free. Call 956-8024 to register.

Wallace and Islanders to speak at QB Club

Hawaii basketball coach Riley Wallace will join a contingent from the Hawaiian Islanders Arena Football team to speak at Monday's Quarterback Club luncheon at Pagoda.

Kimberly Wang, owner and operator of the Islanders, and head coach Guy Benjamin are slated to appear with defensive coordinator Al Noga and quarterback Darnell Arceneaux.

Lunch begins at 11:30 a.m. and the program begins promptly at noon.

Mark Zeug has been elected the new QB Club president. He will hold the post for a year. Earl Galdeira is the new vice president.

Komine dominant in first victory

Nebraska All-American Shane Komine struck out eight of the first 10 hitters yesterday en route to a 9-4 win over McNeese State.

He finished with 14 strikeouts in eight innings and allowed just one hit to earn his first win of the season for the Cornhuskers (2-2).
