Brossman,
Rainbow Wahine
frazzle fizzling
Fresno State

But they can't take over
second place because of Rice's
shocker over LaTech

From staff and wire reports

FRESNO, Calif. >> One down, one to go.

The Rainbow Wahine basketball team took the first of two must-win road games yesterday. Before 489 fans at North Gym, Hawaii routed Fresno State 66-47.

"We have always struggled at Fresno," Hawaii coach Vince Goo said. "This is the biggest margin we've won by in years. Our defense played really well the first 20 minutes and really did a good job in the second half."

The Wahine shot 46.2 percent from the field and were 8-for-16 beyond the arc. Hawaii's bench played almost as many minutes as the starters. After cutting her chin against Rice and missing nearly the entire game, Christa Brossman came off the bench to lead the Wahine in scoring with 14 points. Jade Abele, Karena Greeny and Janka Gabrielova added eight points apiece.

Former Aiea standout Aritta Lane led the Bulldogs with a game-high 16 points.

Brossman helped Hawaii to a 20-point lead when she hit her first trey a few minutes into the second half. Her second came minutes later.

The Rainbow Wahine defense held the Bulldogs to 28.2 percent shooting and denied Fresno State many second chances. Kim Willoughby scored seven points and led Hawaii with 11 rebounds, 10 defensively.

Hawaii plays Nevada on Sunday at noon Hawaii time.

The Wahine improved to 18-6 overall and 11-4 in the Western Athletic Conference. The win didn't improve Hawaii's standing in the WAC as second-place Rice maintained its half-game lead with a shocking 57-56 win against league-leading, seventh-ranked Louisiana Tech (Please see page B4).

Fresno State fell to 9-16, 4-11.

Note: April Atuaia played in her first game since tearing her anterior cruciate ligament Jan. 26 against the Bulldogs. Goo said that Atuaia defended well and gave starter Chelsea Wagner some rest.
