Former ’Bows pitcher
Johnson at Brewers’
spring training camp

Former Hawaii right-hander Mark Johnson reached an agreement with the Milwaukee Brewers late last week following an offseason of wondering and waiting.

"We were very excited. It happened really fast," said Johnson's wife, Kelly.

Johnson has reported to the Brewers' spring training complex in Phoenix.

"I agreed on the terms (Feb. 13) and they said they wanted me here Sunday for a mini-camp," Johnson said. "I actually signed when I arrived here. I'm working out, getting my face out there and threw my first bullpen Wednesday."

Alan Regier, a scout with Milwaukee who was an assistant coach with the Hawaii Island Movers in the 1980s, was in town for the dedication of Les Murakami Stadium.

"He watched me throw bullpen and helped me a lot in getting a chance with the Brewers," said Johnson.

"I'm happy to finally find a team. I didn't know of any reason why it took so long. Milwaukee treated me very well with the contract. Now it's just a case of going out and making the team."

Johnson signed a Triple-A contract and has been assigned to Indianapolis in the International League. Official spring training begins the first week of March.

The Brewers are the fifth major league organization Johnson has played for since being selected by the Houston Astros in the first round of the 1996 draft following three years with the Rainbows.

He's also been with Florida, the New York Yankees and Detroit.

He spent the 2001 season with Detroit's Triple-A Toledo team in the International League and went 7-11 with a 4.79 ERA in 24 starts.

Hawaii-Hilo is in 13th place at 593, while a second UH-Manoa team (Hawaii-White) is in last place out of 20 teams.

John Lieber of San Diego State shot a 1-under 71 yesterday and leads all individuals at 8-under 136.

The top local golfers are Hawaii-Hilo's Nick Mason, who shot a blistering 6-under 66. He's tied for fifth at 141. Hawaii's Matt Kodama (73--142, tied for seventh) and Norman-Ganin Asao (72--143, tied for 10th) are also among the leaders.

The final round is today.
