Each one is unique, but the seven artists participating in "Citizens' X" all have one thing in common. They all have to work at regular jobs by day to pay bills, and by night they pursue their secret lives as artists, letting their alter egos run free. After-hours passions revealed

The artists are Jon Hamblin, Michael Harada, Keiko Hatano, Chika Iijima, Duane Preble, and Alan and Birgitta Leitner, and the results of their after-hours activities are on display at the Academy Art Center at Linekona through March 3.

"I think artists get a bad rap," said the center's curator, Carol Khewhok. "People call them loafers, they think they don't work, but usually they're working double time, trying to make a living by day and making art at night. They're workaholics, and they're not doing art to make money, but because they're compelled to do so."Hatano created her piece while she was in the process of moving and without her usual painting studio. With her life in disarray, she still managed to work her piece with crochet needles, "something I could take any place I want so I could do something."

The men in the show worried that she had crossed over to the world of crafts. Instead she turned out "Sutures," a series of 7.5-foot-long crocheted funnels suspended from the ceiling in an expression of a life held together by threads.The show hours are 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free.
