The defensive line coach considered
an opportunity at BaylorBy Dave Reardon
dreardon@starbulletin.com"It's not one single thing," Singletary said. "I realized today that I'm happy where I'm at. Right now my allegiance is here, to get ready for spring practice. I can't say something won't change in the summer or later, but I've got a good situation here."
Singletary said he was the first choice of Baylor coach Kevin Steele to fill the Bears' vacant linebackers coach job. The position would pay $110,000, considerably more than what Singletary makes now.
A substantial increase in assistant coaches' pay is among the items on UH head coach June Jones' contract renegotiations wish list. Talks between Jones' agent, Leigh Steinberg, and UH have stalled, but Singletary said he is confident things will work out.
"I feel there is security here," he said. "And our boss (Jones) is doing his best to get us the things we need. He's always come through for us."
Singletary has been at UH since the 1999 season, when Jones became head coach.
Singletary said he spoke with several people yesterday, including Jones, Steele and several other UH assistant coaches, before deciding not to go to Waco, Texas, for an official interview.
"I may never get back home to Texas to work," said Singletary, who is from Houston. "But I can always retire there some day."
