Pretty blossoms

Springtime brings two fashion shows paying respect to Japanese and Chinese cultures.

First up is "Hanamatsuri," celebrating the 50th Cherry Blossom Festival with the work of designer Amos Kotomori on March 2.

The event takes place at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Coral Ballroom, beginning with 10 a.m. boutique sales and the 11 a.m. luncheon and Cherry Blossom Queen contestant presentation, followed by the fashion show at 1 p.m.

Tickets are $35 and $45, available by calling 949-2255. Funds raised will benefit the Hawaii Children's Cancer Foundation.

On March 3, the Hilton will welcome the Narcissus Fashion Show, also in the Coral Ballroom and featuring the work of Nouvelle Designs and University of Hawaii fashion design students.

Nouvelle Designs combines the talents of two former UH fashion students Eva Kam and Wei Yang. Both re-interpret traditional Chinese styles using fine silks and European fabrics, in garments ranging from lingerie to evening gowns.

The luncheon event will feature Nouvelle's latest collection for men and women, while showcasing garments by UH students working within the context of presenting a commercial line.

Honolulu Community College students will also show their make-up and hairstyling talents, and there will be entertainment by Forté, DisGuyz and Sing Sing Bliss.

Boutique sales will run from 9 to 11:30 a.m., with the luncheon show to follow.

Tickets are $37 per person or $370 per table and can be purchased through the Chinese Chamber of Commerce by calling 533-3181.
