Screeners will use "wands" for
the first time at Aloha StadiumBy Rod Antone
rantone@starbulletin.comConcert promoters said security today will be similar to that at Honolulu Airport after Sept. 11, with security screeners using hand-held metal detectors, or "wands," to check people entering the gates.
Stadium officials said this is the first time that wands will be used at Aloha Stadium.
If the wands beep during screenings, the persons being checked will be asked to step aside and empty their pockets.
Pearl City police officials, meanwhile, said there will be a police presence at the concert, though they do not expect any problems.
"A private security firm will be doing the wand-waving," said Honolulu Police spokeswoman Michelle Yu. "People are urged to come early because entering the stadium may take longer than usual."
Other security measures for the concert include no coolers, bags, purses, handbags, backpacks, fireworks, air horns or other noisemakers, cameras, recording devices or outside food or drink.
Fanny packs will be permitted but will be subject to security checks.
After last Saturday's NFL Pro Bowl, stadium security received complaints after some fans who had arrived on buses said they had nowhere to put coolers and purses that were not allowed in the stadium.
Stadium officials said signs and banners will be allowed but should not block the view of other concertgoers.
The Aloha Stadium parking lot will open to the public at 4:30 p.m., and stadium turnstiles will open at 5:30 p.m.
Prior to Jackson coming on stage at 7:30 p.m., local band Three Plus is expected to open with some island music. The show is being taped live for playback tomorrow as an "HBO Music Event."
