[HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER]

After 100 minutes of soccer and nine previous penalty kicks last night, it all came down to forward Michelle Quensell against goalkeeper Christie Ayers.

Quensell won the battle and Punahou the match, beating Pearl City 4-3 in penalty kicks to advance to the semifinals of the Meadow Gold Girls State Soccer Championships.

The Interscholastic League of Honolulu champions meet two-time defending state champion Baldwin in the first semifinal today at 5 p.m. at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Park.

Aiea, which upset Big Island Interscholastic Federation champion Hilo yesterday afternoon in penalty kicks, plays Mililani in the second semifinal at 7 p.m.

The Punahou-Pearl City match was tied 2-2 after 80 minutes of regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods.

"We knew they practiced (penalty kicks) every day and so our goal was not to miss," Punahou coach Jorge Barbosa said. "We knew they were a good PK team and we got lucky and they missed two."

Pearl City missed its first chance and Punahou missed on its third attempt. With penalty kicks tied at 3-3 after four rounds, Charlene Lui scored past Chargers keeper Paratina Questel.

Joni Yoon sent her kick for Pearl City high over the net to give the Buffanblu a final chance to end the match. Questel and Ayers, Pearl City's backup goalkeeper, switched at the last second, setting up the showdown between Quensell and Ayers.

Quensell booted the ball into the left corner of the goal to give the Buffanblu the victory.

"Michelle has been injured the last few years and she got released (to play) not too long ago," Barbosa said. "I told her, 'Take us to the promised land,' and she did. She's still limping and hasn't played much, but the kid's got the heart. She fought off the injuries, came back and she wanted it. I had to go with my instincts and she did it."

Pearl City senior Carmen Calpo finished her high school career in outstanding fashion, scoring a pair of goals and adding one of the Chargers' penalty kicks.

Calpo, who is headed to the University of Hawaii in the fall, sent the game into overtime by scoring with just over seven minutes remaining in regulation. Chante Figueroa got by a defender on the right side and made a perfect pass across the field to Calpo, who rocketed the ball into the right corner from 20 yards out.

"She's got the height, the speed, she's amazing," Barbosa said. "We have two people on her and I turn around and she's open again."

Said Buffanblu keeper Allison Lipsher: "(Facing such good offensive players) adds more pressure to the game but we live to play games like this."

Punahou controlled the ball for much of the match and scored on goals by Ashley Collins at the 11:14 mark and Pippa Macdonald at 47:20.

Calpo put Pearl City on the board in the 19th minute, scoring on a header off an Ayers free kick.

Baldwin 3, Kalaheo 0: Jenavi Iida, in her first year on the varsity squad, scored her first goal of the season in the 25th minute and the Bears scored two more times in the second half to win their seventh straight tournament game.

Mustangs keeper Amy Lusk couldn't wrap up a free kick off the foot of Geana Saffery and Iida booted the rebound into an empty net.

Kami Kapaku, who gave the Kalaheo defense trouble the entire game with her speedy bursts toward the goal, scored on a breakaway eight minutes into the second half and Koren Takeyama rounded out the scoring in the 77th minute for Baldwin.

Aiea 2, Hilo 1 (penalty kicks): Chanelle Takemoto made the most of her one chance in goal during penalty kicks, stopping the Vikings' final shot attempt. Minuette Kaiuwailani, Shelby Greer and Kimberly Unten made penalty kicks to give Na Alii a 3-2 edge before Takemoto's diving save.

Mia Van Kralingen put Hilo ahead 1-0 in the 24th minute of regulation and Unten answered for Aiea in the 63rd minute.

Diana Shiroma started in goal for Na Alii. Takemoto played the final 40 minutes of regulation and overtime and Shiroma faced the first four Viking penalty kicks.

Mililani 1, Kailua 0: The top-seeded Trojans pounded 18 shots on goal and Jen Loo provided the necessary offense. Loo scored on a shot from 35 yards out at the 53:09 mark, sending the ball over Surfrider goalkeeper Constance DeCaries. DeCaries made 14 saves in the match.

The Mililani defense allowed just two shots on goal and keeper Eryn Kishimoto was not forced to make a save.

Mililani meets familiar foe Aiea today. The teams played to a tie the first time they met this season -- the only blemish on the Trojans' record.

King Kekaulike 5, Kapaa 3: Kainoa Correa scored three second-half goals for the Waveriders.
