14 UH athletes earn
4.0 GPA in fall semesterFourteen Hawaii athletes at the Manoa campus earned a 4.0 GPA in the fall semester.
The 4.0 scholar athletes are Aaron Barret and Shawn Withy-Allen (football team, Aaron Pribble (baseball), Dejan Miladinovic and Melody Eckmier (volleyball), Anders Jonsson, Michael Thompson and Brandie Smith (swimming and diving), Stacie Hirono and Justina Kahaku (softball), Sadie Martin (cross country and track and field), Lindsay Peters and Paul Thurston (sailing), and Tina Kurabayashi (cheerleading).
In all, 175 UH students were honored as scholar-athletes, by earning 3.0 GPAs.
Stacie Hirano drove in four runs with three hits as Hawaii opened its home softball season with an 8-2 victory over Texas-Arlington yesterday at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. Wahine slug out win
Hirano paced a 14-hit attack with a three-run double in the seventh inning as the Rainbow Wahine improved to 6-3 in their first game of the Chevron Paradise Classic.
Sheri Oronoz gave up one run on two hits in 5 1/3 innings to get the pitching win.
Long Beach State beat Mercer 3-0 in the opener.
The Rainbow Wahine play Long Beach State at 5 p.m. and Mercer at 7 p.m. today.
Iolani School to hold basketball skills clinics
Iolani School is holding two basketball skills clinics for boys and girls ages 6-18.The first session is March 24-25 from 3:30 to 6 p.m., and the second one is March 27-28 from 6 to 8:30 p.m.
Iolani coach Dr. Mark Mugiishi and the Raiders varsity players will instruct the clinics.
The cost is $50 per session of $90 for both. For more information, call 943-2208.
Hawaiian Islanders to hold tryouts Saturday
The Hawaiian Islanders are holding their second invitational tryouts Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Central Oahu Regional Park in Waipio.The Islanders are the newest franchise in the arenafootball2 league, and coach Guy Benjamin will choose 19 players for the active roster from among the 50 players invited to try out.
Bruins take 2 from Vulcans
UCLA (7-3) defeated Hawaii-Hilo (1-20-1) in a two games series -- 9-1 on Wednesday and 9-4 yesterday.Bryce Watanabe had an RBI single for Hilo's only run in the series opener.
Kaliko Oligo had two hits for the Vulcans yesterday.
