Ervan M. Kaneshiro, 39, is in custody at Oahu Community Correctional Center awaiting trial following a preliminary hearing yesterday.
Around 9:40 a.m. Sunday, Kaneshiro parked his Ford van near the rear of the hospital at 640 Ulukahiki St. and entered the basement elevator near the cafeteria carrying an AR-15 rifle loaded with 20 rounds, police said.
A security guard spotted Kaneshiro and confronted him at the elevator that led to patient floors.
According to a court document, the security guard asked Kaneshiro what he was doing there, and he responded "he needed to take care of some business."
The security guard took the rifle away from Kaneshiro and wrestled him to the ground with the help of hospital staff. Security guards held Kaneshiro down until police were called.
Kaneshiro has two prior misdemeanor offenses. Police said the firearm is registered to him. Kaneshiro's mother, who said her son suffers from a mental illness, gave police other firearms that belonged to her son.
