Pro Bowl supplies
the partiers

MOST FOOTBALL fans I know got a big kick out of partying around town last weekend. There were a few concerts, a nice variety of parties going off, and you couldn't ignore all the professional athletes out and about. Forget about those people in the state government who think hosting the NFL Pro Bowl is a money-sucking proposition -- they should have been sucking 'em up at the W Honolulu.

Spotted at Diamond Head Grill over the weekend were some of the league's rising stars, including Jeff Garcia, Keyshawn Johnson and Donovan McNabb. Promotions director Komo Low also brought in U.K. turntablists Thievery Corp. to keep the beats flowing, and a number of NFL cheerleaders were on hand to provide eye candy as well.

But it wasn't the presence of legendary players like Eric Dickerson, Marcus Allen or Jesse Sapolu that got the attention of Saturday night's crowd. Mike Tyson's entrance at the party had people tapping each other on the shoulder and asking, "Is that really him?" Yes, Tyson really is on this rock ...

Seems like he just can't get a break, though ... Earlier in the day while attending the Pro Bowl, Tyson was approached by a fan who now claims the fighter assaulted her while rebuffing her request for an autograph.

The former heavyweight champion appeared to take the incident in stride, however, and was described as "calm" and "rather low-key" when encountered later that night (along with his entourage and bodyguards) by party people at the restaurant ...

Happy birthday to you

YESTERDAY marked the Ocean Club's fifth anniversary at Restaurant Row. The former home of Studebakers, Oceans has remained a favorite choice among the 23-and-over crowd. Whenever I'm driving down Ala Moana early on Friday or Saturday night, I can usually gauge how crazy things are going to get that evening by the crowd gathered in Ocean's lanai area ...

Celebrate five fun years at the club on Feb. 26. There's a $4 cover after 8 p.m., but drinks will cost only two bucks all night. Call 531-8444 for information.

'Weakest Link' tryouts

GAME SHOW fans, get ready: "The Weakest Link" is coming to town, and producers are looking for a few good men (and women) to be on the show.

The initial success of TWL has resulted in a weekday version hosted by George Gray. The syndicated, half-hour game show has been on the air for a little over a month, and contestant coordinators will be at the Sheraton-Waikiki Hotel this weekend looking for "lively, outgoing individuals from all walks of life."

From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, potential contestants will have a chance to take a general information quiz and prove that they can hold their own on the show.

According to a press release, candidates will not be informed of a decision for at least two or three weeks following the tryouts. Individuals selected to appear on the show will be notified approximately a week before they need to be in California for taping.

If you're interested, remember that TWL is what's called a "cast show," that is, your personality and ability to interact with other contestants are big factors in getting picked to appear on camera. Also, applicants must be at least 18.

For more details, call Beck Media & Marketing at 310-689-7273 or 310-689-7227. On Saturday and Sunday, reach contestant coordinators through the Sheraton-Waikiki switchboard at 922-4422.

Out and about

LONELY hearts don't need to sulk at home tonight -- swallow your pride and get down to Kincaid's at Ward Warehouse for what's being called a "Dateless and Desperate" party.

Join 93-1 the Q's Justin Cruz and Eight 0 Eight from 9 p.m. to midnight for an evening of live entertainment and (hopefully) a chance to meet that special someone on Valentine's Day. Prizes to be given away include an interisland trip, Kincaid's gift certificates, movie tickets and more. Call 591-2005 for information.

GRUMPY'S Bar and Grill continues to expand its entertainment lineup at the Keawe Street nightspot across from CompUSA. The '80s night that used to take place on Saturdays has been moved to Tuesdays, and a salsa night has been added on Mondays. As far as tomorrow night goes at Grumpy's, check out Ten Feet when the group performs as part of Mass Appeal's "Hapuna Beach House."

Doors open at 9 p.m., and the folks from Hell's Kitchen will be on hand to pass out free temporary tattoos. DJ Galmiche will spin for about an hour before the concert starts. Must be 21; call 528-4911.

REGGAE fans who can't wait for next month's Gregory Isaacs and Yellowman concert should make plans to be at Anna Bannanas on Saturday night. Local roots band Ooklah the Moc is scheduled to perform with Warsaw, starting at 10 p.m.

There's a $5 cover at the door, but a trip to Anna's always means free parking and reasonably priced liquor. Call 946-5190.

THAT'S what's "In the Mix" for this week. Get at me via e-mail if there's something going on in your neighborhood. Happy Valentine's Day ...
