award nomineesThe award is presented annually to a person who "has devoted his or her exemplary efforts to bring great recognition to sports in Hawaii."
This year's nominees are Honolulu Marathon Association president Jim Barahal, HHSAA executive director Keith Amemiya, National Football Foundation co-president Earl Galdeira, retired sumo star Konishiki and Donnis Thompson, who was Hawaii's first assistant women's athletic director.
The banquet of champions will be held at the Pacific Beach Hotel's Grand Ballroom, with dinner beginning at 6:45 p.m.
Warriors stuck in third in AVCA poll
Hawaii remained ranked third in the latest USA Today/AVCA Coaches men's volleyball poll released yesterday.The Warriors (9-2) are behind No. 1 UCLA and Pepperdine but are ahead of No. 4 BYU, even though the Cougars got four first place votes to Hawaii's none.
Hawaii returns to action Feb. 20 and Feb. 22 when it hosts No. 13 Long Beach State at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Hawaii tennis team drops Abilene Christian
Hawaii had an easy time with Abilene Christian in men's tennis yesterday, winning, 5-2, to improve to 4-5.The Warriors swept the Wildcats in doubles and Justin Menolascino, Malino Oda, Fransisco Brignole and Jorge Gonzales all won singles matches for UH.
The BYUH men's tennis team had an even easier time with Abilene Christian, sweeping them 8-0.
The only Seasider to lose a set was Hong-Tae Kim, who fell behind Clayton Morgan but rallied to win.
Na Opio canoe championship set
The Na Opio Canoe Racing Association will hold its Oahu championship Saturday at 9 a.m. at Keehi Lagoon.Over 750 children in grades 5-12 are expected to compete in the six-man and one-man events.
