Hawaii inks receiver
from California JC


Hawaii added a wide receiver from California to its list of recruits yesterday.

The Warriors completed their recruiting season by signing Se'e Poumele of Southwestern College in Chula Vista, Calif., to a letter of intent.

Poumele, a 5-foot-10, 185-pounder who runs the 40 in 4.5 seconds, also had offers from New Mexico State and San Diego State.

He has two years of eligibility.

Poumele played quarterback last year and was a conference leader in passing with 828 yards and eight touchdowns. He caught 13 passes for 169 yards when he lined up as a wide receiver.

Hawaii has commitments from 25 recruits and has reached the NCAA limit.

Tanaka to represent United States in Judo

Taylor Tanaka, a 2000 graduate of Iolani, has been selected to represent the U.S. at judo events in Germany and Hungary.

Tanaka will compete in a World Masters event Feb. 23-24 at Wuppertal, Germany and March 2-3 in the Hungaria Cup in Budapest. Tanaka competes in the 60-kilogram class.

Warriors rise to No. 2 in magazine poll

Hawaii moved up one spot to No. 2 in the Volleyball magazine poll released yesterday.

The Warriors (9-2) jumped over BYU , which was swept by Long Beach State in its first road contest and dropped two spots to No. 4.

UCLA remains in the top spot, with Pepperdine at No. 3 and Penn State at No. 5.

Hawaii's next opponent, Long Beach State (4-8), received votes but didn't place in the top 10.

Chun to vault for Beloit College

Roosevelt graduate Noelle Chun of Honolulu is in her first year of competing in college track and field, pole vaulting for Beloit College in Wisconsin.

Free shuttle for parking at basketball games

Anticipating overflow attendance for upcoming basketball games, the University of Hawaii has arranged a free shuttle service for fans who park in the upper campus areas. Once the parking structure fills to capacity, drivers will be directed to the upper campus area parking lots.

The shuttle will run from 5:30 p.m. to 9:45 p.m. Feb. 21 and Feb. 23. The last pickup is at 9:45 p.m.

Hawaii colleges to hit golf links

The spring season for Hawaii's college golf teams kicks off this week with a tournament Feb. 13-15 at the Waikoloa Kings' Course.

In addition to Hawaii and Hawaii-Hilo, 22 other schools will be participating, including Arizona State, Fresno State, Georgia Tech and Stanford.

The Warriors are coming off a fifth-place finish at the UH/Turtle Bay Invitational --when sophomore Matt Kodama collected his first collegiate win -- to close the fall season.
