The Honolulu Symphony has successfully concluded a fund-raising drive to match a $1 million anonymous gift to eliminate accumulated debt from previous years. Symphony meets

Star-Bulletin staffThe $1,000,000 gift received by the symphony Dec. 30 required that the organization achieve a balanced budget for the 2001 fiscal year, and raise a matching, additional $1 million by Dec. 31, 2001.
Not only were both met, but the symphony ended 2001 with a modest operating surplus for the first time in three years.
The financial gifts included a $100,000 donation from the William Randolph Hearst Foundation.
Stephen Bloom, symphony executive director, said the organization's goal has been to provide "a strong and stable financial position to support the artistic excellence of the symphony."
In light of the financial turnaround, the symphony has also reached a tentative agreement.with te Musicians Association of Hawaii, Local 677 on a five-year contract.
Details are pending final agreement.
