Homer in 13th stings UH

Casey Fuller hit a two-run homer over the right-center field fence in the top of the 13th inning with Everett Rincon aboard to lift Cal State Sacramento to a 5-2 victory over Hawaii last night at Murakami Stadium.

Rincon opened the inning by getting hit by a pitch from William Quaglieri, who was working his eighth inning of relief.

The Hornets scored their final run on an RBI single by Chris Kinsey. The CSUS (1-1) victory squared the series at one game apiece with the third and final game scheduled for 1 p.m today.

"It's about as bad a game as I've seen in the last 10 years as far as neither team wanting to win. They just outlasted us," said UH coach Mike Trapasso.

"It was just bad baseball. We pitched well but we played horrible defense and gave them two runs. If we play this way we will get beat by anybody. I am disappointed because we did not play fundamental ball and that's what we stress all the time," he said.

The Hornets' Tim Reimer doubled to the left-field gap to open the game and Kinsey walked one out later. With two out, Mario Celillo hit a sharp grounder to Cortland Wilson at short. Wilson bobbled the ball, then threw wide of Lane Nogawa at second base. Reimer and Kinsey scored as the ball rolled into foul territory.

The Rainbows (2-4) got one run back in the bottom of the inning when Brent Cook was hit by a pitch, stole second and moved to third on Gregg Omori's single to right. Scooter Martines followed with a slow bouncer toward the hole that CSUs third baseman Clinton Honeycutt cut off, but bobbled, allowing Cook to score.

UH starter Aaron Pribble struggled and battled in each of his five innings, in part because the senior left-hander walked seven batters. The Hornets had the leadoff man on base in every inning.

Pribble was able to work out of a runners on first and second with no outs situation in the fourth inning and a similar situation with one out in the fifth inning. By then he had thrown 87 pitches and Quaglieri came on to pitch the sixth inning.

The Rainbows were quiet offensively through five innings against CSUS starter Marshall Plouffe, getting only two hits.

Hawaii evened the score at 2 in the bottom of the seventh against CSUS reliever Jeffrey Groeger, who issued a two-out walk to Nogawa, who promptly stole second. Arthur Guillen stepped to the plate hitting .181, but grounded a 2-1 pitch into center field scoring Nogawa.

The Hornets threatened in the top of the ninth when Pedro Santiago walked and was safe at second on Reimer's ground ball when Nogawa dropped Wilson's throw at second base on a potential doubleplay ball.

Quaglieri then induced Bret LeVier to hit another ground ball to Wilson and the UH middle infield turned the double play.

It took two great throws to keep the Hornets from scoring in the top of the tenth. Pinch hitter Chris McCormack reached first on a bouncer up the first base line when Omori dropped Quaglieri's throw at first base. Celillo then hit a high fly to left-center field that hit the base of the wall. Left fielder Chad Boudon fired to Wilson, who's throw to Brian Bock was in time to get a sliding McCormack.
