Castle drops Waipahu
to advance

Iolani perfect in ILH

Two years ago, previously unbeaten Castle was denied a state tournament berth after losing in the quarterfinals of the Oahu Interscholastic Association playoffs.

The Knights are once again one game away from the state tournament after hanging on to beat Waipahu 56-46 last night.

Castle meets Radford tonight, with the winner earning one of four OIA state berths.

Kaiser toppled Leilehua 51-42 in the early quarterfinal game at Castle's gym. Kaiser faces unbeaten and defending state champion Kalaheo tonight.

"We as coaches knew that we had a talented team and the potential was there to possibly get into this position (to reach states)," Castle coach Rocky Fraticelli said. "We haven't peaked yet, we've had our valleys, but it's nice to have another chance.

"We have to put everything together (against Radford)," he said. "The key is mental toughness. We have a few first-year players and you can see in their game they don't have the team type of background."

Which makes having a senior like Joel Botelho, Castle's point guard, so important for Fraticelli. Botelho ran the offense, played solid defense and brought the necessary leadership to help Castle move on.

"It's really important for us to go as far as we possibly can," Botelho said. "This team has a lot of talent and we should be able (to go far).

"We were playing kind of tentatively in the beginning, and in the second half we tried to let loose. We have to do that the whole game."

Justin Bruhn paced a balanced Castle offensive attack with 14 points and Michael Proctor, in his first year at Castle after moving here from Illinois, scored 12.

Castle took an early lead and led 15-11 after the first quarter. Waipahu charged back early in the second, taking advantage of four Knights turnovers to gain a 19-18 lead. It was the final lead of the game for the Marauders.

Castle went six minutes without a field goal, scoring just one point on a Charles Teixeira free throw.

But Proctor got hot, scoring six of Castle's next eight points -- including a putback off an offensive rebound -- to give the Knights a 24-21 lead at halftime.

"I felt pretty good," Proctor said. "Some of my shots didn't fall, but I felt like it was going through (when I shot it) and hopefully tomorrow I'll have an even better game."

Waipahu tied the game at 26-26 three minutes into the third quarter, but Ryen Isip drilled a 3-pointer and Castle held off Waipahu throughout the rest of the second half.

The Marauders got within a point early in the fourth quarter, but the Knights finished the game with an 18-9 run.

During that stretch, Botelho hit a reverse layup, Pookela Craig-Rodenhurst scored five points and Proctor made 5 of 6 free throws.

Maurice Daniels led the Marauders with 12 points.

Iolani finishes perfect run
through ILH

Iolani completed a perfect Interscholastic League of Honolulu basketball season with a 61-49 victory over St. Louis last night.

Iolani sophomore guard Derrick Low led all scorers with 21 points, but the Raider seniors helped put away the stubborn Crusaders in the fourth quarter.

"We struggled a little bit with our offense, but when we really had to score, the seniors stepped up and did it," Iolani coach Mark Mugiishi said.

Center Tyler McCready finished with 14 points in his final game at Iolani gym, hitting all six of his field-goal attempts.

"This is a tremendous goal," McCready said of finishing undefeated in the ILH. "But hopefully it'll just be the beginning for us."

Iolani stayed a step ahead of St. Louis in the first half and took a 27-19 lead into intermission. But the Crusaders rallied in the third quarter and cut the Iolani lead to 38-35 on Jason Rivers' lay-up at the buzzer.

But Iolani broke away for good early in the fourth quarter with a 10-2 run. Jon Grobe and Low hit jumpers to open the run, and McCready surprised the Crusaders by stepping out to nail a 3-pointer.

"I was open, they gave me a look and I just had the courage to take it this time," McCready said.

Another 3-pointer by Bobby Webster and a McCready jumper gave Iolani a 50-39 lead. St. Louis would get no closer than nine the rest of the way.

"That's why they're ILH champs," St. Louis coach Delbert Tengan said. "They hit the tough shots when they needed to."

Iolani has two weeks off before its first game in the state tournament. Punahou's 46-40 victory over Damien gave the Buffanblu the league's second berth. St. Louis must battle for a state tournament spot in the ILH third-place tournament, which starts Tuesday.
