Kapolei offers guidance for college financial aid

Anyone interested in learning how to apply for financial aid for college can attend College Goal Sunday at Kapolei Middle School cafeteria from 1 to 4 p.m.

The event will help students and their families complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid and navigate the financial aid system. The federal application is required by most colleges, universities and vocational-technical schools to determine eligibility for financial assistance.

Participants should bring their 2001 IRS 1040 Tax Return (and their parents, if under 23) or other 2001 income and benefits information. The 1040 does not have to be completed.

College Goal Sunday is sponsored by the University of Hawaii and other academic and financial organizations.

For more information, contact Aileen Lum-Akana at 455-0606, Frank Green at 591-2708, or visit the Pacific Financial Aid Association Web site at www.pacfaa.org.

Online news site puts Hawaii in bioterror lead

An Internet news source reported Hawaii led the nation in bioterrorism lawmaking. Stateline.org focused on innovative public policies taking place in the United States and places Hawaii at the forefront of the fight against bioterrorism.

Stateline said, "Many states deal with outbreaks of flu, meningitis and lately, diseases like the West Nile virus. But Hawaii health officials see numerous cases of more exotic ailments like dengue fever and Hanson's disease."

The report said, "Because its public health authorities regularly confront diseases that most people have never heard of, Hawaii is at the forefront of the fight against bioterrorism."

Lawmakers as well as officials from the state Department of Health, Department of Public Safety, Attorney General's Office and Healthcare Association met following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks to draw up an emergency preparedness plan.

Isle Marines say they are not guilty in 3 robberies

Two Marines charged in three armed robberies pleaded not guilty yesterday in Circuit Court.

Co-defendants Antwain Salters and William H. Linwood IV made their pleas via closed-circuit TV from the Oahu Community Correctional Center.

After their arrests, the two admitted the three robberies and that they wore ski masks and carried guns in each incident, police said.

They allegedly held up an employee at Chevron Food Mart at Stadium Mall on Jan. 13.

The two also are charged with robbing the 7-Eleven on Farrington Highway in Waipahu and attempting to rob Aaxtion Adult Video on Kapiolani Boulevard, both on Jan. 18.

Circuit Judge George Kimura set bail at $100,000 each. Trial is set for the week of April 8.

Cold front has islanders shivering, and strong wind is likely on the way

A cold front moved by the islands today from the northwest, bringing showers, strong winds and chilly temperatures.

"I don't think the rain will be heavy enough to cause a problem, but the winds are going to pick up," said Norman Hui, National Weather Service lead forecaster.

Winds 15 mph to 30-35 mph will continue the next few days, but the showers will probably end tonight, he said.

Hui said cold air behind the front will push overnight low temperatures down to the 60s. The daytime high will be in the upper 70s.

No weather advisories were issued today, but Hui said he "wouldn't be surprised" if one was issued tomorrow for winds.

"We're expecting a pretty good-sized surf coming in tomorrow," he added. It will almost be at the high-surf advisory height of 15 feet, he said
