Women rule in isle opera,
from ‘Traviata’ to ‘Salome’

STILL more examples that this is the Year of the Woman: All three operas presented by the Hawaii Opera Theatre this year center around women. "La Traviata" was a big box-office success, and the question on opera lovers' minds is how much Kristine Clesinski will reveal when she performs the Dance of the Seven Veils as "Salome." Director Henry Akina says while it's not going to be "Sex in the City" and certainly not "The Vagina Monologues," it should be sufficient to seduce some into rushing the box office. Salome will be doing her dance Feb. 15, 17 & 19 ... Didn't get enough of "The Vagina Monologues" when a trio of actresses performed it at the Hawaii Theatre and on Maui? Well, it's being done again at Kennedy Theatre March 2 & 3, a benefit for the Sex Abuse Treatment Center, among other beneficiaries. Each of the 18 monologues in the show will be done by a different woman, and the cast is busy rehearsing ...

WAIKOLOA Land Co. president Thos Rohr considers every year the Year of the Woman, but 2002 in particular. His interest in the Takefuji Classic golf tourney held at Waikoloa's Beach Course fairly soared when he learned that 2001 LPGA Player of the Year Annika Sorenstam will be participating. Wouldn't it be great if she were paired with former UH Wahine golfer Cindy Flom? The ladies tee it up and battle for the lioness' share of the $900,000 purse, starting Feb. 28 ...

THE Kailua restaurant Lucy's Grill and Bar at last has a female co-owner. Jiffy Schneider has taken over the place from her father, Dickie Furtado, and with brother/partner Christian, she'll add a female presence to Jiffy's -- uh, Lucy's ...

Valentine to diet for

SOME people say the way to a woman's heart revolves around chocolate. If true, Kahala Mall is the place to be today through Feb. 13. That's when more than 100 pounds of white and dark chocolate used in Valentine's Day chocolate sculptures will be on display. The very edible sculptures were created by Kapiolani Community College culinary arts program students. They'll be auctioned off at the mall's "Evening of Enchantment" benefit for HUGS from 6 to 9 p.m. Feb. 13. You can start your diet after Valentine's Day ...

IF you've got a case of the blues or want one, KIPO's resident blues band, Jeff Said No, which had played alternate Wednesdays, has now shifted days and will perform on Friday nights at O'Toole's downtown on Nuuanu. Their first regular night there is tonight ...

Old chap and the sea

THE Sheraton catamaran pulled out to waters off Waikiki yesterday morning, and the last wishes of former Sheraton P.R. man Simon Cardew were fulfilled. Simon had finally succumbed to the dreaded, rare debilitating disease, Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, that had wreaked havoc on his body for the past 12 years, and his faithful widow, Joan, brought his ashes per his wish to Waikiki. About 20 close friends helped her pour them overboard, bringing him back to Hawaii from England so it could be his final resting place. For an old chap who loved sailing off Waikiki, it was fitting that his final trip was on a Sheraton catamaran ...
