Porter’s blast
helps UH split

Sophomore Stacey Porter smacked a two-run home run to center field in the top of the seventh inning yesterday to lift Hawaii to a 2-1 win over host UC Riverside in the first game of a doubleheader.

The Highlanders rallied to beat the Rainbow Wahine (1-3) in the second game 4-3 by scoring twice in the bottom of the seventh.

Sheri Oronoz pitched a three-hitter in the opener, allowing just one unearned run. Oronoz (1-1) walked two and struck out one.

The Highlanders scored in the seventh on a double and a Kate Judd error, but Oronoz ended the threat by getting Jenell Jackson to ground out to third base.

Judd had a pair of hits, including a single to set up Porter's game-winning hit.

UH led the second game 3-2 heading into the final inning, but Suzanne Dallas drove in two runs with two outs against freshman Melissa Coogan (0-1).

Paula Blanning, another freshman, went four innings in her first start for Hawaii, allowing just one run. Porter and Judd had RBI singles.

All four of UH's games so far this season have been decided by one run. Long Beach State swept a doubleheader on Tuesday, winning both games in its final at bat.

Hawaii plays in the San Diego State Aztec Invitational tomorrow and Saturday.
