Pro Bowl brings its
‘A’ game to Fort DeRussy

YOU DON'T have to be a football fan to enjoy the Topps NFL Experience under way this weekend at Fort DeRussy in Waikiki. A pair of concerts planned for tonight and tomorrow night, a 65-foot Ferris wheel, autograph signings and prize giveaways are all part of the party surrounding Saturday's Pro Bowl.

The Brothers Cazimero, Sean Na'auao and the Poi Pounders are scheduled to perform starting at 7 p.m. tonight as part of "Pro Bowl Hawaii Night." Tomorrow night's "Pro Bowl Bash" (also starting at 7 p.m.) will feature the sounds of Disguyz and MTV's DJ Skribble. Be sure to stick around for the fireworks show that will follow Skribble's performance.

Prizes up for grabs include tickets to Saturday's Pro Bowl and next year's Super Bowl, a year's supply of gasoline from Tesoro Hawaii and a chance to win a 2002 Cadillac Escalade. Ticket prices range from $2 to $5 at the gate depending on what day you go. The Topps NFL Experience is open until 9 p.m. tonight, from 1 to 10 p.m. tomorrow, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. Bring a canned food item for the Hawaii Foodbank and save an extra buck off admission. Call 526-4400.

On Saturday night the Pro Bowl festivities move to Aloha Tower Marketplace for the official post-game block party. NFL players will sign autographs along with Pro Bowl cheerleaders and team mascots.

NB Ridaz visit Hawaii

ABOUT 400 Xtreme Radio listeners were part of a private concert by the NB Ridaz during KXME's Super Bowl party last weekend at Zanzabar. The group, formerly the Nasty Boy Klick, performed their latest hit, "Runaway," along with earlier tracks. The Ridaz didn't spend much time here, flying in on Saturday and leaving Monday morning. If you're wondering what the guys did to unwind after performing, they hopped on mopeds and went zipping around like normal tourists ...

Concert updates

FOUR years have passed since Save Ferris played Hawaii, when they were here riding the success of 1997's "It Means Everything" release. Next month, the ska band returns for an all-ages show at World Cafe with Pimpbot scheduled to open. The show starts at 7 p.m. and tickets are $17.50. ... Then hold March 4 open for Jimmy Eat World at World's. The $17.50 tickets go on sale Saturday.

The first weekend in March also brings "The Superstars of Reggae" to the Waikiki Shell on March 2. Gregory Isaacs and Yellowman will perform starting at 6 p.m. Ticket prices range from $18 to $25. Call 526-4400.

LOCAL rockers will soon have another opportunity to get their music heard. Lava Rock 105.9 FM is accepting recordings for its local music showcase, "The Show."

Lava Rock's Young Marc serves as host of the program, which airs from 7 to 8 p.m. Sundays. Bands are encouraged to send in member biographies along with either a "well-produced" CD or minidisc to the station for consideration.

Reach 'em at: "The Show," 765 Amana St., No. 206, Honolulu 96814; or call 947-1500.

Out and about

THE LEGENDARY Bob Marley would have turned 57 yesterday had he not died of cancer in 1981. On Friday night, join T.H.C. and friends for the "Bob Marley Birthday Jam" at Jaron's in Kailua. The party starts at 10:30 p.m. with a $5 cover charge. Call 261-4600.

Hip-hop fans won't want to miss Jurassic 5 in concert Saturday at World Cafe. The Los Angeles-based crew stops off in Honolulu after concerts this week in Japan. Jurassic 5 also performed last month in Australia. Doors open at 7 p.m., and the Nocturnal Sound Krew will be there to represent the 808 state and hype up the crowd. Tickets are $20 presale. Call 585-2877. Catch the full story on both groups in tomorrow's Weekend section.

Tuesday brings the return of Mardi Gras Hawaii. Celebrate by getting sloshed in the street on Nuuanu Avenue from King to Pauahi. Eight sidewalk bars will keep drinks flowing, and there'll be food from restaurants like Kakaako Kitchen, Side Street Inn and Indigo. Entertainment, a parade and a Mardi Gras costume contest are also scheduled. Admission is free, but food, drinks and beads will all cost you. Call 545-4195.
