The following preview of movies opening this weekend runs every Tuesday in the Star-Bulletin:
"Big Fat Liar" -- Frankie Muniz of TV's "Malcolm in the Middle" plays a boy whose school essay finds its way into the hands of a Hollywood producer (Paul Giamatti) who turns the idea into a hit film. The boy and his friend (Amanda Bynes) then travel to L.A. to get his due credit by any means necessary (PG).
"Collateral Damage" -- The Arnold Schwarzenegger action/thriller finally hits theaters after its initial release was delayed due to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. In the movie, a firefighter loses his wife and child to a terrorist bombing by Colombians, and Ah-nuld, of course, takes matters into his own hands in hunting down his quarry into South America (R).
"The Independent" -- In this mockumentary, Jerry Stiller plays a veteran B-movie producer whose latest project, "Ms. Kevorkian," is having problems, all the while being stalked by a rabid pair of documentarians. Co-stars Janeane Garofalo and a bunch of actors and directors in cameos, all playing themselves (including Ron Howard and the late Ted Demme) (R).
"Monster's Ball" -- A racist Georgia death-row attendant falls in love with the black wife of a man he executes. Billy Bob Thornton, Halle Berry and Sean Combs star in this powerful drama (R).
"Rollerball" -- Update of the 1975 action flick when the term "extreme sports" was just an idea to hang sci-fi ideas on. Here's a look four years into the future -- just add more violence, the possibility of death and instant video game-like thrills. Stars Chris Klein, Rebecca Romijn-Stamos, LL Cool J and Jean Reno (PG-13).
