If coaches' salaries were made public, the 10 highest salaries at the University of Hawaii would all be more than $200,000.

However, the annual report to the Legislature on UH executive, managerial and faculty salaries excludes coaches' salaries because they fall under a different contract and bargaining unit.

Although June Jones' salary remains a secret, UH President Evan Dobelle has said the UH football coach earns more than the president's $442,008, which tops the salary list for 2001.

Medical School Dean Edwin Cadman's salary rose by more than $15,000 from the previous year, but it was not enough to keep him from getting bumped to the No. 2 position after two years at the top.

Two other medical school administrators also earn more than $200,000.

The fifth-highest salary goes to the newly created interim Manoa Chancellor Deane Neubauer, who is also the interim system vice president for academic affairs.

Not included in the annual report were the salaries for J.R.W. "Wick" Sloane, hired as the UH system chief financial officer at a salary of $227,000, and UH Vice President for External Affairs Paul Costello, who earns $184,000. Both started on Dec. 17.

This time, no professors or researchers made the top 10 salaries, although two cancer researchers were among the highest paid in 2000.

The researchers and deans of the colleges of Engineering, Business Administration, Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources were replaced by three system vice presidents and two medical school administrators.

In all, some 51 executives and managers and 178 faculty/researchers earn more than $100,000 a year. Except for two from UH-Hilo, all the faculty/researchers are from UH-Manoa. The highest-paid professor -- in the College of Education -- earns $169,720.

The executive total includes the chancellors and provosts at UH-Hilo, UH-West Oahu, Kapiolani Community College, Honolulu Community College, Maui Community College, as well as the chancellor for the community colleges system and three vice chancellors.
