HILO >> Lava has stopped flowing at the Hawaii County viewing site near Kalapana, and the county is reducing the hours of access to the area.

Beginning Sunday, viewing will start at 2 p.m. instead of noon, the mayor's office announced.

Also beginning Sunday, the latest that cars will be allowed into the area is 6:30 p.m., and they must be out by 8 p.m. Currently, the latest cars can go in is 8:15 p.m., and they must be out by 10 p.m.

The viewing status is updated daily at 808-961-8093.

On the other side of the flow field in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, access via Chain of Craters Road continues, but no glow from fresh lava can be seen in the area, the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said.

Instruments show moderate seismic tremor, indicating magma is still flowing underground, even if no fresh lava is seen on the surface.
