Kauai has second spill of sewage in a month

LIHUE >> Up to 10,000 gallons of raw sewage spilled into Port Allen Harbor Wednesday night and yesterday morning when a pump apparently failed, Kauai County officials said.

It was the second such spill in less than a month. The first, also apparently caused by a malfunctioning pump, spilled treated effluent from the Lihue Wastewater Treatment Plant into Kalapaki Bay and forced the closure of the beach in front of the Kauai Marriott Resort for several days.

In both cases, alarms designed to alert county officials that a spill was taking place failed to operate.

State Health Department officials were at Port Allen yesterday morning taking water samples.

Signs were posted warning fishermen and small craft to avoid using the harbor.

The spill affected only the Department of Transportation side of the harbor, and Na Pali cruise boats continued to use it.

The Department of Land & Natural Resources half of the harbor, used primarily by smaller charter fishing and scuba diving vessels, was not affected, county officials said.

The county signed an emergency contract with a technician yesterday to test the pumps at both waste-water facilities. The technician is expected to begin work by tomorrow.

>> Mayoral candidate Duke Bainum will hold a news conference today at 1 p.m. at his campaign headquarters at 1503 Kapiolani Blvd. An A9 story that ran yesterday incorrectly stated that it will be at the Campaign Spending Commission's office in the Leiopapa a Kamehameha Building on Beretania Street.

>> Claudia Lenore was one of the three people who drowned Saturday in a flash flood on Maui. Her name was misspelled in a story Monday on Page A3.

>> Free parking is offered only for guests at the ASTON Waikiki Tower, and the ASTONishing Deals Coupon Book is given to ASTON guests on check-in. A story on Page F4 of the Travel section Sunday said incorrectly that parking was free at all Aston hotels except Waikiki Tower and that coupon books were given at checkout.

>> A photo caption on Page A1 Monday stated that recycling vending machines on the University of Hawaii campus were broken at the time the photo was taken. The recently installed machines were undergoing programming to accept a variety of bottles and cans, said a spokesman for Tomra Recycling, which owns the machines.
