'Man of War' moving in on Oahu

Pre-production for Revolution Studios' $70 million film "Man of War" starring Bruce Willis begins next week when several key executives set up shop at the Hawaii Film Studio at Diamond Head.

The production is renting from the state the new 16,000-square-foot soundstage and the original, smaller stage -- referred to as the "Hawaii Five-0" -- through June for $6,000 and $2,500 a month, respectively.

Filming, which begins mid-March, originally was to be held on three islands: Oahu, Kauai and the Big Island. The filming now will be done only on Oahu for budgetary reasons, sources said.

Revolution will use the "Five-0" soundstage as a mill for set construction, then move sets and offices into the main stage Feb. 15.

The on-site cottage offices currently are being used by Imagine Entertainment for its film, tentatively titled "Surf Girls," scheduled to complete Hawaii filming around Feb. 12.

In "Man of War," directed by Antoine Fuqua, Hawaii is doubling for Africa. A Special Forces unit led by Willis is sent to an African country to retrieve a doctor (played by "Malena" star Monica Bellucci, who just completed filming "The Matrix Reloaded") doing humanitarian work in a small village, before the civil war reaches her. The woman refuses to leave unless the 40 villagers are evacuated with her.

Fuqua directed the Castle Rock/Warner Bros. film "Bait"; "The Replacement Killers," starring Chow Yun-Fat and Mira Sorvino; and, most recently, "Training Day," with Denzel Washington.

BeatleMania tickets go on sale

Tickets go on sale tomorrow for the 7:30 p.m. March 2 "BeatleMania Live!" show at World Cafe, featuring Louise Harrison, the sister of late Beatle George Harrison, as the evening's host.

Touted as "the number one revival concert act touring today," the four bandmates recreate the look and sound of the Fab Four, from the group's early Liverpudlian days to the psychedelic era of Sgt. Pepper. .

Tickets are $27.50 advance and $30 at the door, available at all Tower Records and Video branches, World Cafe's box office, Hungry Ear Kailua, ITT Kaneohe MCBH, Pearl Harbor Bloch Arena, or charge by phone at 585-2877.

A Generic aloha to the Knumbskulls

If aloha means both hello and goodbye, tonight's punk shindig will both welcome back, for the band Generic, and bid bye-bye to the Knumbskulls.

Generic was a big part of the local hardcore punk scene since the mid-'90s, and after a two-and-a-half year hiatus, this new incarnation includes a couple of members from Potluck.

The event also marks the Knumbskulls last show here before three band members leave for the mainland, with San Diego the ultimate musical destination.

Also on the bill are Lose Money and The Sticklers. Join the punkness, won't you?

Singing for Him, and fans

Four Christian recording artists, including True Vibe, formed by 98 Degrees founding member Jonathan Lippman, will perform two concerts this month at Hawaii Theatre.

The concerts take place Feb. 15 and 16 and will also feature 15-year-old Stacie Orrico, Nikki Leonti and Jan Brenner, plus the Halau of New Hope, which communicates the gospel through hula, creative signing, hip-hop, street and Polynesian dance.

"Jump Jump Jump," a single from True Vibe's self-titled album, was the No. 1 song on Christian charts last summer.

Leonti has had four hits, including the No. 1 song from her "Shelter Me" CD, "Everlasting Place."

Orrico has been compared to Whitney Houston and Lauryn Hill based on the strength of her CD "Genuine."

Brenner has long been one of Hawaii's top entertainers and is now a pastor at Word of Life Christian fellowship. Her latest CD is "Trust Him."
