‘Zoorotica’ offers bubbly,
chocolate, mating rituals

IF they can have "The Vagina Monologues" at Hawaii Theatre, why can't the Zoo feature "Animal Magnetism." We know from Cole Porter that "birds do it, bees do it," and on Valentine's Day, our Zooperstars will be featuring wild romance during "Zoorotica." Visitors get guided tours complete with champagne and gourmet chocolates to get in the mood for an explanation, and perhaps demonstration, of the mating rituals and practices of Zoo inhabitants -- the ones behind bars. Adults only, please -- call 526-4391 for the evening of educational, yet fun, tours ...

WHO'D have suspected a kind of crime wave in Waimea on the Big Island? Sleepy Waimea has had five break-ins recently, and those in search of crystal meth through trading stolen goods are suspected. Oddly, the latest break-in was at C&S Outfitters, located across the street from the Waimea Police Station ... More typical Big Isle news concerns a large auction that takes place a week from Saturday. On Feb. 9, Barbara Meheula is heading up an auction benefiting historic Mokuaikaua Church, just mauka of Hulihee Palace in Kailua-Kona. Chief among the 190 or so items up for bid is the original handwritten score of the only operetta written by Charles E. King, the late Royal Hawaiian Bandmaster and composer. Its estimated value: $25,000 ...

Hawaii exposure

Nice bit of publicity for W-Honolulu, Kahala Mandarin Oriental Hotel and Princeville on Kauai. PineRidge has just been given the green light for 30 more episodes, and have approved a new one-hour special called "Hawaii's Hottest Hotels" to air late this year. Smith admits they're halfway through development of a huge series on Hawaii that must remain secret for now to ward off copycats ...

NOT only did he refuse to accept $1 million in pay this year to demonstrate his commitment to righting a faltering economy, but new Bank of Hawaii Chairman and CEO Mike O'Neill now finds himself in some interesting company. He's joining retired GE Chairman Jack Welch, Ford Chairman William Clay-Ford Jr. and Southwest Airlines Chairman Herb Kelleher as one of Irish American Magazine's "Business 100," a veritable Irish Who's Who in business ...

Dita, not Tita

PROBABLY Hawaii's top country singer, Dita Holifield is back from Nashville where she was laying down tracks for her new Sony CD. When she walked into the studio and looked over the musicians, one looked familiar. She said to a technician, "That guy looks just like Bruce Hornsby." He replied, "Probably because it is Bruce Hornsby." Hornsby has his own album, "Big Swing Face," due out in May ...
