Kahuku’s Fonoimoana
picks BYU

Kahuku wide receiver Ferron Fonoimoana verbally committed to Brigham Young yesterday.

Fonoimoana (5 feet 8 inches, 165 pounds) was a Star-Bulletin All-State first-team selection and was a big-play threat as a receiver and kick returner for the Red Raiders. He caught 28 passes for 680 yards as a senior and led the Oahu Interscholastic Association's Red Conference in scoring with 12 touchdowns.

Kahuku coach Siuaki Livai said Fonoimoana will fit in nicely with BYU's offensive system.

"Loga is a playmaker," Livai said. "Every time we got the ball in his hands, he made things happen."

Livai said Fonoimoana plans to go on a mission with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints when he turns 19.

Fonoimoana is the fifth Kahuku senior to commit to an NCAA Division I university and the first local player to choose BYU this year. Jonathan Mapu committed to Tennessee on Tuesday. Inoke Funaki, Tala Esera and Kalavi Blanchard have declared their intention to attend Hawaii.

Hawaii plays at BYU on Sept. 7.

Livai said all-state running back Mulivai Pula is also close to making a decision.

Pula is considering Hawaii, Utah and BYU. Offensive lineman Tuika Tufaga is also considering a scholarship offer from Utah.

Two Edison High School (Huntington Beach, Calif.) football players remained undecided between Hawaii and San Diego State yesterday.

Wide receiver Denny Flanagan and defensive back A.J. Martinez were expected to announce their commitments yesterday, but Edison coach Dave White said they hadn't come to a decision.

White said Martinez may be leaning toward Hawaii and Flanagan is still torn between the two.

The first day high school seniors can sign binding letters of intent is Feb. 6.
