Sabrina Alesna-Mindoro pitched a complete game and drove in the winning runs in the bottom of the sixth inning for Baldwin, which had little time to recover from its 6-5 loss Monday to Maui High in the Maui Interscholastic League championship game.
"The kids feel like they have something to prove," Baldwin coach Ryan Souza said. "I just let them focus themselves. I didn't have to say much to get them motivated."
Baldwin fell behind Castle, the Oahu Interscholastic Association runner-up, 2-0 after the first two innings. Castle's Cheri Defiesta drove in Sachelle Featheran in the top of the first inning. Puna Waiolama provided Castle's second run with an RBI single to score Megan Cravalho in the second.
Baldwin rallied to tie the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the second, taking advantage of two Castle errors.
Castle had an opportunity to take the lead in the top of the sixth, putting two runners on first and second with one out. Cravalho singled to center, but Baldwin center fielder Zoie Sevilla gunned Pedrina down at the plate to kill the rally.
"That was huge," Souza said. "I've been asking her to be a leader this season, and she stepped up tonight."
Sevilla led off the bottom of the sixth with a bunt single which Ashlyn Russell followed with a single to right field. After a strike out, Alesna-Mindoro drove a Lia Pedrina pitch to the right-field fence for a two-run triple giving Baldwin a 4-2 lead. Alesna-Mindoro then scored on a ground out by Jenna Mailou.
Alesna-Mindoro, who was battling a fever, opened the seventh inning by walking Puna Waiolama and Stephanie Panee. Featheran loaded the bases by reaching on an error. But Alesna-Mindoro recovered to strike out the next batter. A ground out by Pedrina scored Waiolama, cutting the Baldwin lead to two runs. But Alesna-Mindoro got Cheri Defiesta to ground out to end the game.
Baldwin won the MIL regular-season title, but lost to Maui in the league's tournament and fell to the Sabers again on Monday in the league championship game.
"I still had high regard for them," Castle coach Jon Berinobis said. "They're a great hitting team and they've got great speed, just like (OIA champion) Mililani. It's hard to defend speed.
"Hats off to Baldwin. They're going to be tough to go through."
