Bill to halt traffic-camera
program gets hearing

Star-Bulletin staff

Sen. Cal Kawamoto, transportation committee chairman, will hold a hearing on a bill to repeal the state photo traffic enforcement program Tuesday at 1 p.m. in Room 229 of the state Capitol.

Kawamoto, (D, Waipahu) had initially refused to hold a hearing, according to Sen. Colleen Hanabusa, (D, Waianae) who in return had threatened to gather the votes to pull the bill out of Kawamoto's committee.

Kawamoto said he thinks "stronger, more effective public education and information accompanied by possible modification of the current system" will handle many of the complaints from drivers.

Meanwhile, Sens. Kalani English, (D, Maui) and Bob Hogue (R, Kaneohe) have collected signatures from 46 of the 76 legislators calling for the state to immediately stop the controversial program.
