The comparisons can't be helped. Fabulous Five vs. Team Hawaii. UH cant avoid
measuring stickBy Cindy Luis
cluis@starbulletin.com"The joy of winning is theirs to discover," Hawaii associate head coach Bob Nash said yesterday. "They've seen a film of the Fab Five, saw the excitement we had.
"But each team has its own identity, its own time. The Fab Five was the Fab Five of its time. This is the time for this team."
Nash was a member of the Fabulous Five, a team that went 47-8 between 1970-72. In Nash's senior year, Hawaii finished 24-3 and earned the school's first NCAA Tournament berth.
This year's team is 17-3 and has already won as many games as last year's squad that also went to the NCAA Tournament.
The Rainbows returned to the Stan Sheriff Center yesterday to practice at home for the first time since Jan. 16. Hawaii was very happy to be back.
"It feels good to be home," said senior guard Mike McIntyre, who was named the Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week yesterday. "You get tired of being in places that you're not that comfortable with.
"We're 17-3, but it's still a long season and we're only midway through the WAC.
"Coach (Riley Wallace) says we're a special team and I believe him. It's the senior season that any senior would like to have because it's a winning team. I'm fortunate to be playing on a team like this."
Last week, McIntyre helped Hawaii win at Rice and Tulsa with a combined 42 points and 10 3-pointers. Against the Golden Hurricane, he tied his career high of 22 points and hit a personal-best six 3-pointers.
In this week's polls, Hawaii received 35 points, good for a tie with Texas at No. 30 in the USA Today/ESPN coaches rankings.
In the Associated Press Top 25, the Rainbows received 12 votes, placing them at No. 36. Hawaii moved up to 45 in the latest RPI and is No. 61 in the Sagarin ratings.
