Malloy takes surf contest at Sunset Beach

Dan Malloy captured the Faith Riding Pro yesterday at Sunset Beach. Malloy, a California resident who resides on Oahu's North Shore during the winter, was a last minute entry into the event.

He was delighted with his first professional win and called it the highlight of his career.

Sunset Beach local Liam McNamara finished second, while Nathan Carroll, the youngest finalist at 16, was third.

Vulcans drop pair to Florida State

Hawaii-Hilo lost two baseball games to Florida State yesterday.

The Seminoles defeated the Vulcans 16-2 and 5-1 at Francis Wong Stadium, improving to 2-0 to keep Hilo winless at 0-9-1.

The Seminoles were leading 6-0 with two men on base in the second inning when Saturday's game was stopped because of rain. The game commenced yesterday morning at Simmons Field with FSU adding three runs each in the second and third, a run in the fourth and three more in the sixth.

Ryan Barthelemy led the Seminoles with four hits and five RBIs, including a two-run shot in the third.

After doubling to right-center with two outs, Vulcan center fielder Darren Chu scored on a single by Kaliko Oligo in the third. Jeremy Loque singled home Bryce Watanabe in the seventh for Hawaii's last run.

In the second game, Vulcan pitcher Jeremiah Wolske allowed four hits and just one earned run in five innings. After Tony Richie's RBI triple in the first, Wolske settled down until the fourth, but two Hawaii errors led to two runs. The Seminoles added two more runs in the seventh to pad their lead. Hawaii scored in the eighth on an RBI triple from Oligo.

The series ends today at 2 p.m. at Francis Wong Stadium. It is Senior Citizen Day so seniors 55 and older will be admitted at no charge.

From there, the Seminoles will travel to Oahu to play Hawaii Pacific and Hawaii.
