Police homicide detectives are investigating the shooting of a man who was found Saturday night off Pali Highway in Nuuanu.

Police said the victim was discovered lying on his stomach on Jack Lane near Dendai Mission of Hawaii around 11:04 p.m.

A gunshot wound was discovered under the victim's right armpit.

He was taken to Queen's Medical Center by ambulance where he died a few hours later.

Homicide Lt. Bill Kato described the victim as a man in his 30s.

Police said last night they did not have information on any suspects.

Witnesses said about five gunshots were fired after 11 p.m.

A police officer who responded to an unrelated case on Pali Highway also heard gunshots but was unsure where they were coming from, Kato said.

Three shell casings were also found in the area. Kato said a 9 mm handgun may have been used to shoot the victim.

Jean, a housekeeper at Dendai Mission of Hawaii, said she was walking toward the mission house from a bus stop when she saw the victim sprawled on the pavement.

A motorist called police on his cellular phone, said Jean, who did not want to give her last name.

"Nowadays it's scary. You don't know who's carrying handguns," Jean said.
