Chargers make run at repeat

Pearl City moved a step closer to defending its Oahu Interscholastic Association girls soccer championship by beating Kaiser 3-0 last night in the first round of the league playoffs.

The Chargers got goals from Carmen Calpo, Chante Figueroa and Christie Ayers to win on their home field.

Kahuku also survived the first round with a 4-0 win over Leilehua in the first match of the doubleheader at Pearl City.

Castle held off Waialua for a 2-1 win at Roosevelt.

Roosevelt, the third seed in the OIA East, avoided an upset by beating Radford 3-2 in double overtime. Kelly Tengan's goal in the 83rd minute of the match gave the Rough Riders the win.

The winners advanced to today's quarterfinal doubleheaders at Mililani and Kailua.

Kailua takes on Pearl City at 5:15 p.m. in the first match at Mililani. The host Trojans, the top seed in the OIA West, face Kahuku at 7. In matches at Kailua, Aiea plays Roosevelt at 5:15 and OIA East champion Kalaheo meets Castle at 7.

Today's winners move on to Wednesday's semifinals and earn berths in next month's Meadow Gold State Girls Soccer Championships. The losers fall into the fifth-place bracket.

Rashaun Broadus and Simeon Tavares led the way with 12 points each as the Trojans used a 20-6 third quarter run to pull away from the Golden Eagles and remain unbeaten in the OIA West.

Mililani emptied its bench in the fourth quarter as 12 players managed to score.

LaMichael Wilkins scored a game-high 18 points to help the Rams defeat Na Alii and move into a tie for second place in the OIA West.

Up three points at halftime, Radford outscored Aiea 17-8 in the third quarter to take a commanding 12-point lead.

Campbell hit six 3-pointers in the game, but struggled to hit key shots down the stretch in its comeback attempt.
Campbell's Jacob Cadelina led all scorers wth 17 points.

Pearl City led 28-27 going into the fourth quarter, but outscored the Bulldogs 22-15 in the final period to avoid the upset.

Kamehameha jumped out to a 25-15 halftime lead and held off a St. Louis rally in the second half to earn the win.
