‘Kahala Moon’ shines
with new songs on CD

On the heels of her mother Mihana Aluli Souza's hot new "Rust on the Moon" CD, Mahina Souza is releasing a CD, "Kahala Moon," with Kahala Mossman next month. A CD of songs by the late Irmgard Farden Aluli, Mihana's mom, is in the works. Three generations of CDs. The title, "Kahala Moon," is right in sync as Mahina means moon and Mossman's first name is Kahala. Most of the songs by the young women have a light, easy beat and five of them were written by the harmonious pair. The titles of their songs give you an idea of what the two beauties think about: "Beautiful Hawaiian Boys," "Magic in Your Eyes," "Army of Love" "Bottle of Wine," and a real grabber called "It's Our Sunshine." Cool. They included one of tutu Irmgard's Hawaiian swing compositions, "Kumu Kalidadidi," a longtime favorite of mine ...

'Bad Girls' plug opera

Love those Hawaii Opera Theatre ads picturing Linda Coble, Carole Kai and Anne Namba as "Bad Girls" to promote the "Wicked Wahine" operas: "La Traviata," "Salome" and "Carmen." Lt. Gov. Mazie Hirono and Margery Bronster will also portray "Bad Girls" in ads. Katie Doyle-Hummel had no problem joining the "BGs." She does radio spots for the operas. "Traviata" opens Friday at the Concert Hall ... Dee Levy, who does much more than her share of charity fund-raising and volunteer work, had a birthday last Saturday. Husband Bob, who also does volunteer work at Queen's Hospital and is a strong Honolulu Symphony supporter, took her to the Chef Martin Wyss dinner at the Bali last Saturday ...

STAGGERING ON: Eddie and Myrna Kamae's Happy New Year card mailed Jan. 7 arrived this week, a bit late, as it was sent to the old Star-Bulletin. I get letters weekly with the old address. Please use: 500 Ala Moana, 7 Waterfront Plaza, Suite 210, Honolulu, HI 96813. The card is a beaut, picturing Eddie at Kalaupapa and reading: "Eddie returned to Kalaupapa to play music for the people and to tell the story of the late Choirmaster Ernest Kala" ...

'Monologues' contributes

"The Vagina Monologues," playing through Feb. 3 at the Hawaii Theatre, helps raise funds for the Domestic Violence Clearinghouse & Legal Hotline. The nonprofit benefits from an event Tuesday including a Compadres fiesta, a trolley to the show and a chance to meet star Loretta Swit at the eatery afterward. Cost is $100 ...

Cheers to singer Al Waterson who marked his 10th year at Fisherman's Wharf last night ... Jeff Teves sends word that his parents, singer Ethelynne and Gene Teves, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last Saturday by renewing their vows at Sacred Hearts Church where they were married ... Peter Schall is the Aloha Festivals' ambassador of aloha this year and Marylou Kekuewa and Paulette Kahalepuna are serving as floral parade grand marshals. The positions were reversed last week because of incorrect info from a festival representative ...

The Genoa Keawe tribute with scores of veteran entertainers was a smash last Saturday at the Hawaii. KINE's Mike Kelly says it was filmed. Let's hope one of the TV stations play it ... Exchanged greetings with Mayor Jeremy Harris at a traffic light this week. Harris, facing questions about campaign donations, says he's "hanging in there" ...
