Flappers converge
on Royal HawaiianIn the 1920s, to be beaded was to be in style. Tiny, sparkly, glittery beads adorned sheer, light dresses in intricate patterns that mimicked delicate embroidery or lace.
On Feb. 1, the bead will be back, when the Royal Hawaiian Hotel celebrates its 75th birthday with a flapper-themed party. Guests have been asked to come in period costumes and they'll be able to pose for pictures in vintage automobiles.
To complete the picture, the hotel will auction off two custom-made dresses in the style of the era, one black and one in many shades of pink and lavender -- both are beaded, of course.
The dresses were made for the hotel by Dewey, a Los Angeles designer who studied fashion design at the University of Hawai'i. They will be up for bid at the gala, which begins at 6 p.m. at the Monarch Room (tickets are $200; call 532-6099).
Also, several dresses depicting the Art Deco style of the '20s and '30s will be on display in the hotel lobby through Feb. 9. Among them are two -- one is shown at left -- that bear the original beadwork from gowns worn on opening night, Feb. 1, 1927. The dresses were donated by families of the women who wore them, but the cloth had deteriorated to the point that the beads had to be transferred to new fabric.
