Islanders get Moore
for inaugural season

Ed Moore, a former football and basketball player for Punahou School, has been assigned to the Hawaiian Islanders by the arenafootball2 league.

Moore played at Columbia University, but an injury ended his college career. The 6-foot-4 Moore returned to football in 2000, playing in a semipro league in Austin, Texas. Last season, he played briefly for af2's Columbus (Ohio) Wardogs.

Warriors drop to No. 4 in latest volleyball poll

Hawaii dropped one spot in yesterday's Volleyball magazine poll.

The Warriors (3-2), coming off a loss Saturday to UCLA, slipped to No. 4. UCLA moved up a spot to No. 1 in the poll, followed by BYU and Stanford.

Former No. 1 Penn State slid to fifth after losing two of three matches at last week's Outrigger Invitational.

Yellowjackets upend Sea Warriors

BILLINGS, Mont. >> Kyle Stirmlinger had 19 points and nine rebounds last night as Montana State-Billings beat Hawaii Pacific 67-56 in men's basketball.

The Yellowjackets (14-3, 4-2 Pacific West Conference) recorded a school-record 28th straight home victory.

Nash Subotic led Hawaii Pacific (12-5, 3-2) with 15 points, followed by John Avilla with 13.

Seasiders challenged: At Silver City, N.M., Scott Salisbury hit a pair of free throws with 26 seconds left to help Brigham Young-Hawaii (2-3, 11-7) survive a scare from winless Western New Mexico (0-6, 1-11).

Salisbury led the Seasiders with 25 points and 10 rebounds, while Alexus Foyle contributed 20 points and the final critical board on a last second shot.

Vulcans tie Cal Poly after losing opener

The Hawaii-Hilo baseball team nearly got its first win of the season, tying Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 8-8 in the second game of a doubleheader after losing 9-2 in the first contest.

Hilo (0-7-1) trailed the second game 8-6 in the bottom of the eighth before Nalei Sooto's two-run homer to left with Keola Park aboard tied it. It was Sooto's second dinger of the day.

The teams played to a time limit because of the Mustangs' (3-0-1) travel plans.

Seasiders tennis team starts with a shutout

The Brigham Young-Hawaii men's tennis team started its season with a 9-0 whitewash of Sonoma State at Laie yesterday.

Peter Madarassy and Hung Soon Park, the Seasiders' top two singles players, had little trouble with the Cossacks, dropping a single set each.

The only Seasider to have a bit of trouble was Hong-Tae Kim, who beat Sean Benoit 7-5, 6-3.

Chang commits to Waikoloa Challenger

Former world No. 2 Michael Chang has said he will play in the Hilton Waikoloa Village USTA Challenger today on the Big Island.

He joins a field that includes 2000 champion Paul Goldstien, James Blake, Taylor Dent, Mardy Fish, Robby Ginepri and Vince Spadea.

Gotcha to sponsor Pipeline event for 6 years

Gotcha Brands has teamed up with local promoter Reid Inouye as sponsor for Inouye's long-running Pipeline surfing contest through 2007.

This year's Association of Surfing Professionals four-star World Qualifying Series contest will run Feb. 19 to March 3.
