The following is a preview of movies opening this weekend which runs Tuesdays in the Star-Bulletin:"The Count of Monte Cristo" -- The Alexander Dumas classic gets its most recent reworking, with Jim Caviezel in the lead as an innocent man wrongly but deliberately imprisoned who escapes and is transformed into the mysterious, wealthy count. Guy Pearce ("Memento") and Richard Harris co-star (PG-13).
"I Am Sam" -- Sean Penn plays a mentally challenged man whose bond with his 7-year-old daughter is threatened when their unconventional living arrangement comes to the attention of a social worker who wants her placed in foster care. Michelle Pfeiffer plays Sam's attorney (PG-13).
"Kung Pow: Enter the Fist" -- Writer-director Steve Oedekerk deconstructs a 1976 Hong Kong kung fu film, "Savage Killers," while attempting to spoof the action-movie genre by starring as "The Chosen One." The film-within-a-film has Oedekerk placing himself digitally into the old film, re-dubbing the voices and adding new scenes (PG-13).
"Lantana" -- A police detective is forced to re-examine his future as a family man and cop when he is consumed by an affair he's having and a murder mystery that seems to involve all the people in his life. Anthony LaPaglia, Geoffrey Rush and Barbara Hershey star (R).
"The Mothman Prophecies" -- This psychic thriller is about a reporter (Richard Gere) drawn to a small West Virginia town to investigate how strange phenomena there might be connected to his wife's mysterious death (PG-13).
"A Walk to Remember" -- Pop star Mandy Moore's debut film is a Christmas romance about the daughter of a minister in a small North Carolina town in the '50s who gets involved with the only son of a wealthy family (PG).
