Raiders survive Rivers’ run

Iolani passed its stiffest test of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu basketball season, holding off St. Louis for a 51-43 win last night at McCabe Gym.

The Raiders (6-0) led by as many as 15 in the second half, only to see St. Louis charge back and cut the lead to three late in the game. But Iolani's Derrick Low and Bobby Nash combined to hit six free throws down the stretch to seal the win for the Raiders.

"We didn't have a game where in the last couple minutes we had to protect a lead, and I was happy to see we were able to do that," Iolani coach Mark Mugiishi said. "They had a nice run at the end and we could have easily folded but we didn't."

Nash led Iolani with 17 points, while Low scored 16 and Tyler McCready added 10.

Iolani held St. Louis guard Jason Rivers without a basket until the six-minute mark of the fourth quarter.

But Rivers exploded for nine points in the next four minutes to lead St. Louis back. His steal and layup capped a 9-2 St. Louis run and cut Iolani's lead to 43-40 with 2:18 left in the game.

But Nash and Low were perfect from the line down the stretch to give Iolani a comfortable cushion again.

"That was clutch," Mugiishi said. "I was proud of them."

Matt Sonoda hit three 3-pointers and led St. Louis (4-2) with 11 points.
