HPU wins again on road
against W. New Mexico

The Hawaii Pacific basketball team downed Western New Mexico on the road yesterday for the second consecutive day.

John Avilla scored 14 points and Nash Subotic added 12 as the Sea Warriors beat the Mustangs 73-67.

HPU dropped WNMU 68-60 on Friday.

The Sea Warriors improved to 3-1 in the Pacific West Conference (11-4 overall) after losing the opener to Chaminade.

HPU shot just 42 percent from the field yesterday, but made eight 3-pointers and out-rebounded WNMU 44-31. Avilla drilled four of the team's treys.

Joey Ramirez led the Mustangs (1-10, 0-5) with 13 points.

Seasiders drop another to host Yellowjackets

Brigham Young-Hawaii wrapped up its two game set at Montana State-Billings with a 120-80 loss yesterday.

The Seasiders gave up 79 points in the second half and were outshot from the field (49.2 percent to 62.1 percent), from 3-point land (23.1-38.5) and the line (50-77.8). Alexus Foyle led BYUH with 20 points and Scott Salisbury added 15 but was held to six rebounds. Every player scored for the Yellow Jackets (13-3, 3-2).

The Seasiders (10-7, 1-3) travel to Silver City, N.M., for a game tomorrow against Western New Mexico.

Makiki judo club hosts tournament today

The Makiki Seidokan Judo Club, part of the 50th State Judo Association, hosts a tournament today at 9 a.m. at the Waipahu High School gym.

Professor Jim Kojima, International Judo Federation and Olympic Referee Commissioner, will be observing and critiquing athletes and referees.

Elliott and Kapeli playing well for Pacific

Pierre Elliott, a 6-foot senior guard from Kaiser High School, is the leading scorer for the Pacific University men's basketball team. He is averaging 13.2 points per game and leads the 7-6 Boxers with 32 blocked shots.

Katannya Kapeli, a sophomore guard from Kamehameha, has started all 14 games for the Pacific women's basketball team. She is the third leading scorer, averaging 9.4 points per game, and leads the 7-7 Boxers with 36 steals.

Takekawa named to freshman all-region team

Sarah Takekawa has been named to the Soccer Buzz All-West Region freshman women's soccer team.

A midfielder/striker, the Kailua High School graduate scored six goals and had four assists for the 15-3-2 Gaels who advanced to the second of the NCAA Tournament.
