City driver's permit test offered in 7 translations
The city's written driver's permit test is now available in seven foreign languages, Mayor Jeremy Harris announced.The tests are now translated into Tagalog, Mandarin, Korean, Vietnamese, Japanese, Samoan and Tongan.
The translated versions are available at all stations administering the tests. The 30-question test has three different versions and each one is available in the seven languages. More than 1,500 of the foreign language tests were taken in the last six months of 2001.
Planned upgrade to affect Pauoa Valley electricity
Some residents of lower Pauoa Valley will be without power tomorrow morning as Hawaiian Electric Company crews upgrade electrical equipment, Heco announced.People who live on Pauoa Road between Kanealii Avenue and Namilimili Street and on Liko, Puna and Akaka lanes will be affected from about 9 a.m. until noon.
State Judiciary report now available on Internet
Anyone with Internet access who wants to review the work of Hawaii's court system over the past 12 months can log onto the Judiciary's Web site.The 2001 Annual Report of the Hawaii State Judiciary is available at www.state.hi.us/jud, the Judiciary announced.
It's hoped that having the annual report and other documents available online will reduce costs. Printed copies of the report will still be available in February at public and academic libraries throughout the state.
The report includes caseload statistics and financial data, descriptions of the structure of the Judiciary, new judicial appointments and month-by-month highlights of certain activities and events that occurred during the past year.

Woman, 67, robbed at Newtown bus stop
Police are looking for a man in his 20s who allegedly robbed a woman at knifepoint in Newtown yesterday morning.The 67-year-old woman was waiting at a bus stop on Komo Mai Drive and Hapaki Street at about 6:50 a.m., when a man pulled up in his truck, police said.
The suspect held a knife to her throat, demanded her purse and fled, police said.
The man is described as 5 feet 7 inches tall, weighing 160 pounds.

Kahului house fire causes $105,000 damage
An early morning fire caused an estimated $105,000 damage to a house under renovation in Kahului yesterday, a fire official said.When firefighters arrived at 98 Alehela St. at 3:06 a.m., the house was in flames, said Acting Chief Alan Pascua. Three units brought the fire under control at 4:27 a.m. and it was extinguished at 5:43 a.m.
Neighbors in a cottage behind the four-bedroom, one-bath house called 911 shortly before 3 a.m.
No one was injured.
The cause of the blaze is still under investigation.
Big Island investigation begins after woman shot
Big Island police are investigating a shooting in Naalehu yesterday morning.Police were called to Kau Hospital at about 3:30 a.m. after a 26-year-old woman arrived with a wound to her left shoulder.
The woman told police she was shot while trying to grab a rifle from a 48-year-old woman at a house in Green Sands subdivision.
The victim was taken from Kau Hospital to the Hilo Medical Center and was reported in satisfactory condition.
Police have opened a reckless endangerment case. The suspect has been identified but the case is pending further investigation.
