Mililani tops Aiea for
OIA West lead

Rashaun Broadus' 22 points was certainly a key to Mililani's victory over previously unbeaten Aiea last night, but it was the play of his teammates that turned the game into a rout.

Three Mililani players scored in double figures as the Trojans defeated Na Alii 79-62 in an Oahu Interscholastic Association Western Division contest at Mililani Gym.

Mililani moved into sole possession of first place in the division by improving to 6-0 and avenged a preseason loss to Na Alii. Aiea fell to 5-1 with four games left in the regular season.

Broadus remained the centerpiece of Mililani's offensive attack, and he got help from Brandyn Fidel (11 points) and Simeon Tavares, who hit for 18 off the bench. Kaipo Patoc added eight and Trey Brown had seven.

"We have a lot of guys who can score," Mililani coach Mike Coito said. "And if they do it all at the same time, great."

Broadus dazzled the crowd with lightning quick drives down the lane and frustrated Na Alii by stepping back to knock down jumpers. Broadus said the loss to Aiea in the consolation round of the Iolani Classic served as inspiration for the Trojans as they prepared for their regular-season encounter.

"For the past two weeks we've been talking about this game," Broadus said. "So everybody was really prepared."

Aiea took an early 15-10 lead thanks to the hot shooting of Wes Williams, who hit his first three shots, including a pair of 3-pointers. But Mililani reeled off an eight-point run, all coming from Broadus and Fidel, to close the quarter and take an 18-15 advantage and didn't trail the rest of the game.

The Trojans extended the lead to 40-30 at halftime and kept the pressure on in the second half. With Aiea keeping an eye on Broadus, Tavares repeatedly exploited gaps in the defense to drive for easy layups. He also made all five of his free-throw attempts.

Williams led Aiea with 19 points, while Chris Antonio hit for 16.

The win gives the Trojans control of the OIA West title chase after beating two of the divisions best in Aiea and Radford.

"I feel good we got past these two," Coito said. "I'm going to relax a little, then we'll start building up for Pearl City. There's no cupcakes out there. All the games are tough."
