[ WAHINE BASKETBALL ]
HOUSTON >> The Wahine basketball team turned in its usual effective defensive effort, but was woeful on offense, resulting in a 57-43 loss to Rice. Wahine offense stalls
in loss at RiceFrom staff and wire reports
The Wahine tied their season-high for turnovers with 21 and set marks for futility by hitting just 20 percent (10-for-50) of their field-goal attempts and drew a blank (0-for-6) from 3-point range. The 20 second-half points were the fewest in any half this season.
The Owls (11-4 overall, 5-1 WAC) only hit 30 percent of their field-goal attempts but sank six 3-pointers that more than accounted for the final margin.
"We thought Rice would come with more pressure and try to deny passes, but they played a little soft out front," UH coach Vince Goo said. "We needed to change our game plan. Wanted to go to our post people, which we did at times, but they had a lot of hands and were quick."
Trailing 19-14 with 8:40 left in the first half, the Wahine went almost five minutes without a point as Rice upped the lead to 13 points, 27-14. Then, as the half was drawing to a close and the Wahine were enjoying the bonus situation at the foul line, they managed to hit just 4 of 8 free throws and went to the locker room down 32-23.
Hawaii (10-4, 3-2) cut its deficit to eight points five times in the second half, the last time with 7:15 to play and trailing 46-38, but managed to score just five more points.
Time and again Hawaii tried to run its inside power game, only to have an Owl tip the ball away, leaving the Wahine with either a turnover or precious few seconds on the shot clock.
Not only did the Rice defense put the clamps on UH's inside game, allowing just 14 points in the paint, it was successful in denying good looks from the perimeter when the Wahine kicked the ball back out.
"You look at the stats and might think we won," Goo said. "We outrebounded them and went to the free-throw line 37 times, but we missed 14. That hurt us, especially in the second half. We'd go to the line, but only make one, and they would come down court and score a basket.
"We missed some easy layups, shots we normally make. We were off from the field and the free-throw line. It can't get much worse."
The loss was UH's fourth in four games at Autry Court. The team travels to Tulsa today and plays the Golden Hurricane (10-6, 5-2) at 10 a.m. tomorrow.
