Arena tryout tomorrow

The Hawaiian Islanders arena football team is holding its first open tryout tomorrow from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Central Oahu Regional Park.

The registration fee is $35.

The team, which will play in the arenafootball2 league, held an invitation-only tryout last week.

The Islanders open their AF2 season on March 30 at 7 p.m. against the Fresno Frenzy at Blaisdell Arena.

In addition, the team is holding cheerleader/dance team tryouts on Jan. 30 at Blaisdell Arena. Applicants must be 18 or older, and resumes and videos are being accepted. Send them to Hawaiian Islanders, 345 Queen St., Suite 907, Honolulu, HI, 96813.

WAC tourneys remain in Tulsa for 2003

The Western Athletic Conference men's and women's basketball tournaments are returning to Tulsa for 2003 for a third consecutive year.

Originally, the tournaments were scheduled to be held at Fresno State, but the new basketball facility being built on campus won't be ready in time.

Fresno State is expected to bid to host in 2004.

HPU baseball team reschedules 2 games

Hawaii Pacific's baseball games Jan. 29 against Florida State and Chico State have new starting times.

The Sea Warriors play the Seminoles at 11 a.m. and go up against the Wildcats at 3 p.m. at Hans L'Orange Park in Waipahu.

HPU opens its season tomorrow at 4 p.m. at Hans L'Orange against Sonoma State.

2 paddling races this weekend

The Aston Kaanapali Shores Regatta and the Pelekunu Challenge outrigger canoe races are tomorrow and Sunday. The Kaanapali regatta is tomorrow from 1-3 p.m. at Kaanapali, Maui.

The Pelekunu Challenge begins Sunday at 8:30 a.m. from Maui, with the first canoes expected to arrive at the Kailua Beach finish line around 4 p.m.

Hilo softball team adds player from Nevada

Shortstop Shaina Overbay has signed a letter of intent to play softball for Hawaii-Hilo.

The Reed High School (Sparks, Nev.) senior was a two-time all-league selection and defensive player of the year.
