To no one's surprise, the Rice Owls have been picked to win the Western Athletic Conference regular season baseball title. Rainbows picked fifth
in Trapassos first yearIt is the sixth consecutive season Rice has been so chosen by the league's coaches in their preseason poll. The Owls have followed through by winning the WAC crown in each of the five years they have been a league member.
Hawaii was picked to finish fifth, and Rainbow first baseman Gregg Omori was named to the preseason All-WAC team.
The coaches voted Fresno State second, Nevada third, San Jose State fourth and newcomer Louisiana Tech sixth.
Hawaii coach Mike Trapasso wasn't surprised with the Rainbows' selection, figuring that's about where they would be picked.
"I'd rather wait and see where we end up at the end of the year," Trapasso said. "The one positive thing was seeing a deserving player like Gregg Omori get recognition. I'm glad people are starting to realize how good a player he really is."
The coaches named Rice third baseman Hunter Brown preseason Player of the Year and Fresno State pitcher Bob Runyon preseason Pitcher of the Year.
Rogers, Kusutani win Bob and Ron's run
Richard Rogers and Hawaii Pacific's Sayuri Kusutani were the male and female winners of the Bob and Ron's 5K Run, sponsored by the Mid-Pacific Road Runners.Rogers ran the course in 15:33 on Monday to beat Gerardo Avilla by 20 seconds. Mark Bridenstine came in third with a time of 16:22.
Kusutani won the women's race easily,finishing in 18:55.
Kohatsu a sure shot for Ohio State
Ryan Kohatsu of Hilo helped his Ohio State rifle squad to a win over Akron last Saturday, coming in third in the smallbore rifle competition with a score of 560 and finishing second in the air rifle with a 377. His total score of 937 was the third best of the day.
Carvalho rides to moto-cross victory
R.J. Carvalho beat Josef Deutsch to win the open portion of the Hawaii Motorsports Association's moto-cross race Sunday.Other winners included Bronson Hethcote in the 250 expert and 125 expert, Mike Zane in the Masters and Mike Sulastri in the Barkbusters.
