Court orders examination for woman in anthrax hoax

A detention hearing for a Kalihi woman accused of sending threatening letters containing what she alleged to be anthrax to three police stations in November has been continued to Jan. 31 so she can be evaluated.

Sharon Cardenas, 24, will be examined to determine whe-ther she presents a risk to the community, U.S. Magistrate Kevin Chang said.

The government contends she is a danger to the public and is expected to oppose her release and ask that Cardenas be detained pending her trial. She is the first to be prosecuted here for an anthrax hoax since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
