OK, all you creatures of habit. It's time to try something new. Scouts roll out new
cookie flavorsStar-Bulletin
Every year when the Girl Scouts start hawking those cookies, you buy the Thin Mints, or maybe the Samoas. This year the girls are offerings two new choices, and one is even low fat.
Olé Olé is a little mound of shortbread rolled in powdered sugar, with 1 gram of fat per cookie (a Thin Mint has 7 grams per 4 cookies).
Also new are All Abouts, also shortbread, but with a chocolate coating on one side.
Cookie sales began this week and will continue through Feb. 4. Cookies sell for $3.50 per box and are available directly from Scouts, or at sales tables set up outside supermarkets and Blockbuster locations.
Don't want to leave your cookie-acquisition quest to chance encounters? Call the Scouts, 595-8400, ext. 219, and arrange for delivery or ask for the cookie sales site nearest you.
Isle coffees and teas
Coffees and teas from Hawaii -- canned or bottled for convenient drinking -- have been hitting the market at a caffeine-fueled pace in the last few months. The latest to hit stores is Kona Café, which debuted locally last week and is set to go national in February.
First flavor up is Chocolate Macadamia Nut, made with organic Kona coffee and low-fat milk. It's available at 7-Eleven stores now, with more retail locations to come.
Also recent releases are teas that capitalize on the trendy health benefits of green and herbal teas:
Big Kahuna Hawaiian Herbal Tea: These hefty 20-ounce bottles are the latest in the Big Kahuna line, which launched nationwide in 1988 with a variety of fruit drinks. The Kaneohe-based company now offers iced teas in flavors of passion orange, lemongrass, spearmint and ginseng/honey.
Jasmine Green Tea with Ginseng: The Aloha Maid Juice line has expanded to include this iced tea. Jasmine and ginseng are added to curb the tea's innate bitterness.
Green Tea Latte: The Royal Mills Iced Coffee line now includes this canned latte, which combines green tea with milk and sugar.
