Islanders get Arceneaux

Darnell Arceneaux has been assigned to the Hawaiian Islanders by the arenafootball2 league, making him the first player in team history.

Arceneaux played quarterback for St. Louis School and Utah, where he led the Utes to a win over Fresno State in the 1999 Las Vegas Bowl.

The Islanders held their first tryout Saturday, attended by Blaine Lacanaria, Kenny Harper, Chris Paogofie and Morrie Roe, among others.

The next tryout will be held Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at a location to be announced.

Call 532-7362 for tryout information. A fee of $35 is charged at the site.

Warriors fall to third in Volleyball magazine poll

The Hawaii volleyball team dropped one spot in the Volleyball magazine poll. The third-ranked Warriors flip-flopped with No. 2 UCLA, which was No. 3 last week.

Hawaii plays UCLA on Saturday in the eighth annual Outrigger Classic.

The first AVCA coaches poll is set to be released today.

Costas Theocharidis and Tony Ching participated in a full practice yesterday. Theocharidis and Ching were nursing nagging minor problems that kept them from hitting. Theocharidis had a mild bicep strain, while Ching's shoulder problem was a by-product of surgery.
