Iolani’s guards save day

With their big men in foul trouble for much of the game, Iolani's guard tandem of Derrick Low and Bobby Webster combined to score 45 points to lead the Raiders to a 70-52 victory over Punahou last night.

Those fortunate enough to find parking and wedge themselves into a seat in a packed Iolani gym watched Low break away for layup after layup as the Raiders improved to 3-0 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu. Punahou fell to 2-1.

Iolani forward Jon Grobe and center Tyler McCready both had four fouls midway through the third quarter and forward Bobby Nash had three when Webster and Low turned on the jets.

Low scored 12 of his game-high 27 points in the third period, while Webster added seven of his 18.

"We knew they were in foul trouble and we tried to step it up," Low said. "We stepped it up in scoring, we stepped it up in rebounding, we stepped it up on defense. We just took it upon ourselves to take it to another level."

Punahou was led by Alex Fergus, who finished with 18 points and five rebounds. Dane Uperesa accounted for 12 points and four rebounds, all coming in the second half.

Punahou led 4-2 in the early going before Iolani went on a 10-2 run to take control. The Raiders led 28-17 at halftime and extended the lead to 49-29 entering the final period.

Iolani used a ball-hawking zone defense to frustrate the Buffanblu and create breakaway opportunities for Low.

"That's the best part of our game, the transition game," Iolani coach Mark Mugiishi said. "And we were able to do a good job again."

Punahou outrebounded Iolani 16-4 in the first half, but couldn't take advantage as the Buffanblu converted five of 14 shots in the first half. Iolani made 16 of its 27 shots in the second half and shot 55 percent for the game.
