Photographers have one, fisherman have one,
and now, thanks to Scott Jordan, geeks also
have a vest of their own, one made to carry
wires, gadgets and gizmos.

Ex dot-com attorney
tries a little geek chic

In Las Vegas this week, one of the biggest draws at the International Consumer Electronics Show is its first-ever fashion show. Models with cropped hair and tattoos strut daily down a runway to drums and electric guitars, then pause, turn and flash handheld computers or cell phones at the crowd.

"You make a fashion statement by the type of phone, the type of PDA (personal digital assistant), the size of the computer you arm yourself with," said Scott Jordan, a former dot-com attorney attending theshow.

A year ago, Jordan quit drafting legal briefs and started designing the Scott e-Vest for on-the-go techies.

Resembling a fishing vest, it has hidden clips and pockets to organize wires and gadgets. Jordan claims he has already sold several thousand of the $99 garments on his company's Web site, www.scottevest.com.

The vest includes features such as conduits to hold wires in place, collar loops to hold earbuds, and 15 pockets, including some with inside wiring conduits and a pocket-in-pocket beverage holder for true multi-tasking.

Jordan hired a Playboy model to circulate through the crowd, wearing an e-Vest.

"It's my attempt to get over the geek stigma," Jordan said.

Yeah, right.

Clothing as canvas

Art has always had a copacetic relationship with fashion. Lately the line between the forms has blurred to the point that fashion designers are having gallery exhibitions and artists are designing clothes.

"Painted Threads" combines the works of three artists -- Carol D'Angelo, Dexter Doi and Jennifer Rothschild -- and marks the debut of fashion designer Keola Rapozo and partner Lee "Kekoa" Benjamin.

While the artists have produced works in their own mediums, they have also collaborated to produce one-of-a-kind fashion reflecting "Tropical Urban" style, defined as having "a playful edginess" while embracing "island roots."

A reception for the artists takes place 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. today at Pauahi Tower, Bishop Square, 1001 Bishop St. The show continues at the gallery from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays to Fridays, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays through Jan. 26.
