best in Rainbow
Diving InvitationalHawaii sophomore Mike Gowdy made sure the Rainbow Diving Invitational ended with a splash, winning the three-meter competition and placing second in the one-meter dive with a score of 332.4.
Gowdy was under little pressure though, having already qualified for the NCAA Zone E championships at Stanford University in March.
Jon Coyle, another sophomore, returned to the team after a semester off, taking sixth in the one-meter dive with a score of 276.5.
Coyle was cleared to compete the morning of the event.
Seniors Sarah Shepard and Jenalin Miller were Hawaii's next best divers, with Shepard finishing 13th and Miller taking 17th in the three-meter dive.
The UH men's swimming and diving teams will take on UNLV and Minnesota at noon Saturday at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.
Hawaii Pacific meets No. 9 SMU in tennis
The Hawai'i Pacific men's tennis team will play against nationally ranked Division I Southern Methodist University on Friday at the Kailua Racquet Club at 11 a.m.Hawaii Pacific is the top-ranked team in NCAA Division II, while the visiting Mustangs come in ranked ninth in Division I.
In its last two seasons, HPU appeared in the NCAA finals and returns five of six starters from last season's 17-3 squad.
Leading the way again this season are ITA All-Americans Michael Maata, Stefan Pampulov and Jan Tribler.
HPU also adds transfer Blaz Jurjec, an All-American at Lees-McRae last season.
HPU visits Hawaii on Jan. 28.
Boating classes begin at Waikiki Yacht Club
The Honolulu Power Squadron will be holding a seven-session evening course in safe boating starting Jan. 14 at Waikiki Yacht Club.Ownership of a boat is not required, but graduates may be eligible for a discount on their marine insurance.
